JOBURG FILM FESTIVAL
The Key objective of the Joburg Film Festival is to curate, elevate and celebrate a strengthened local and African film and entertainment industry, that recognises talented works and their creators.
The extended Joburg Film Festival programme centres around three important elements:
- The Film Programme
- The Industry Programme
- The Youth and Audience Development Programme.
Film lovers will be treated to an impressive list of international and African premiers and film screenings at the Festival hub.
The thrilling line-up of films will be curated by an expert team of curators, led by Pedro Pimenta, a respected filmmaker and member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
A panel of industry leading experts is constituted to judge the films presented at the Festival. The films will be judged on elements such as storyline, direction, cinematography, relevance, creativity, execution and technical application. The jury includes the likes of world-renowned storyteller and South African novelist, Zakes Mda, award-winning actress famous for her role in NCIS New Orleans, CC Pounder and Femi …….(add surname and who he is). In keeping up with the theme of “celebration”,various awards will be announced at the Festival’s Awards Gala Dinner. These include: Best Film, Best African Feature and Best Documentary.
The Industry Programme is hosted in partnership with DISCOP JOBURG, the continent’s leading gathering of industry players that will take place from 20 to 22 November 2019 at the Sandton Convention Centre. With more than 1 000 delegates expected to attend the three-day event, the DISCOP market brings together content buyers, independent producers and distributors and provides an opportunity for like-minded entertainment and media players to connect and share experiences about current best practice trends in the world today.
This year, the Industry Programme will be supported by a series of Master Classes and panel discussions that will cover a vast range of topics related to the filmmaking industry – from writing and casting to animation and the intersection of film and technology. The presenters at these events include an array of seasoned and well-known industry professionals from the continent and abroad.
Youth and Audience Development Programme
The youth and audience development programme is a film skills transfer initiative aimed at creating a film culture in Gauteng townships by providing young film enthusiasts and those interested in the filmmaking process with the opportunity to interact with leading industry players.
From the end of September to the end of October, a series of workshops will be run in Tshwane, Emfuleni, Mogale City and Ekurhuleni. Each two-day workshop will cover various film disciplines and an opportunity to interact with industry players. The 2019 Youth and Audience Development Programme will be hosted in partnership with Gauteng Film Commission and MultiChoice’s Magic in Motion development initiative.
The programme also includes special screenings across other parts of Gauteng aimed primarily at youth audiences.
The Film Club
The 2019 Joburg Film Festival also marks the establishment and launch of the Joburg Film Festival film club – a lifestyle centred club of people gathered on and offline, for the enjoyment and appreciation of the cinematic arts. The Joburg Film Festival film club will bring film lovers together in specially designed experiences and screenings of classic and contemporary films. Members of the Joburg Film Festival film club will get special access by invitation to exclusive events hosted by the film festival.
The Joburg Film Festival film club will allow friends and patrons of the Joburg film club to stay connected with the Joburg Film Festival between annual instalments.
